The Chawton Hill team were appointed by Wealden District Council to carry out a Planned Preventative Maintenance (PPM) survey at Wealden Crematorium. The aim being to identify areas for maintenance and establish a programme of works to repair and maintain the building for future users.
The crematorium was constructed in 2019 by Baxall Construction to a design by Clague Architects. It includes a chapel for 120 seated mourners, a waiting area, a book of remembrance, staff office and crematory spaces, service areas and car parking.
The architects have designed the site in such a way that one funeral cortege never crosses the path of another. The only time they may meet is at the entrance and exit junction to the main road.
However, after seven years of use, the building and adjoining site were showing signs of dilapidation. Chawton Hill’s role is to help bring the building back up to standard and establish a scheme of maintenance. Our surveyor spent time on site, carrying out inspections and making recommendations. Our PPM surveys are fully costed and set out recommendations according to importance / urgency to help clients identify in what order works should be carried out and to help prioritise capital spending.
It’s a particularly interesting project as there are many interfaces between different areas of the building. The aim is to bring it back up to specification and introduce a maintenance plan that details how to look after it. This should in turn ensure the crematorium remains a safe, comfortable and sympathetic space for users in years to come.
Should you need help with a Planned Preventative Maintenance (PPM) survey, please don’t hesitate to get in touch with one of the Chawton Hill team today.
