East Wittering and Bracklesham Parish Council approached Chawton Hill Chartered Surveyors to design a new Youth and Community Building. The facility was predominantly for use by the Girl Guides Movement, the UK’s leading charity for girls and young women.
The Brief
- A multipurpose Community Hall for recreational use.
- A youth hall for use by the Girl Guides.
- A kitchen with cooking facilities.
- Washroom, changing and showering facilities.
- Storage rooms and an office.
The Site
We were presented with a greenfield site on Downview Recreation Ground with funding provided by the local Woodger Trust as an enhancement to the Witterings community.
Chawton Hill successfully designed the building and gained planning consent. We then tendered the project and appointed a Contractor. Throughout the construction phase, Chawton Hill acted as Employer’s Agent to oversee the construction of the project.
Final Thoughts
A spokesperson from the parish council said: “The design of the building is not bulky or out of scale with the area or local context. It provides a positive opportunity to enhance the site and surrounding area and is a much needed community facility.”
The building provides the local Girl Guiding Movement with a multipurpose sports space and a youth hall providing cooking facilities for community functions. The building is now in occupation and the Girl Guides have had their first meeting. As tenants, the Girl Guides Movement has hired the hall for a range of activities including Pilates.
